A leaked trailer bearing the title Mass Effect Universe offers a look at the sequel BioWare was making before EA canceled it. Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier says the footage is real, with the clip circulating on October 22, a day after the publisher announced the studio's closure.

The footage features Liara T'Soni alongside an unidentified character wearing the N7 coat seen in earlier teasers. It is not a new game announcement: EA's October 21 statement says the next Mass Effect was still in early development and that the company has decided not to proceed.

That leaves the trailer as a glimpse of the canceled project, not evidence that development has resumed. EA and BioWare have not officially released the clip or confirmed Universe as the game's final title.

Liara returns in the leaked footage

The roughly two-minute teaser follows an ex-military character meeting an asari in a bar. Glimpses of combat and a mass relay accompany their conversation before Liara arrives and a fight breaks out. The clip ends with the Mass Effect Universe title card.

Kotaku's report notes that the trailer opens with a disclaimer describing its assets as pre-production and the footage as in-engine. That distinction is important: it does not establish that these scenes were playable or representative of a finished game.

Schreier's confirmation concerns the trailer's authenticity. It does not confirm a release date, platforms or a replacement developer. The leaked clip is linked on Reddit, rather than published through EA's official channels.

Less than a year ago, BioWare was still publicly reassuring fans about the sequel. In its November 7, 2025 N7 Day update, executive producer Mike Gamble said the team was focused exclusively on Mass Effect, with features and romances still to build.

EA has since canceled the next Mass Effect and announced BioWare's closure, including its Edmonton workspace. Its memo describes a small team working on the RPG and a decision to concentrate on fewer simultaneous large-scale projects.
