Moving to Nintendo Switch 2 does not mean buying your Switch library again. Compatible games still work, and some get free updates with better visuals or extra features. Paying for a Switch 2 upgrade is a separate decision, one that depends on the game and what you want from it.

The confusing part is the naming. A free update, an upgrade pack and a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition can all improve an older game, but they are not interchangeable. Even an “upgrade pack” can be free. Meanwhile, a game sold separately for both consoles might offer no upgrade route at all.

Before buying another copy, check which of those arrangements applies to the game you own. There can be a considerable difference between downloading an update and paying for the full release again.

Free updates, upgrade packs and Switch 2 Editions

Nintendo's Switch 2 Edition guide defines an Edition as the original Switch game bundled with its upgrade pack. If you already own that original game, either physically or digitally, you can get the pack separately where one is available.

A free software update works differently. You update the Switch game you already own, with no separate Edition purchase needed for those improvements. Nintendo's free-update list includes Super Mario Odyssey, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Link's Awakening and Echoes of Wisdom.

The changes vary. Odyssey adds improved image quality, HDR and GameShare for two players controlling Mario and Cappy. Scarlet and Violet receive image-quality and frame-rate improvements. Do not assume every updated game gets the same resolution, frame rate or multiplayer features.

Separate Switch 2 releaseCheck the publisher's policy. Owning the Switch version may not entitle you to an upgrade.

Backward compatibility itself is not a promise of an enhanced version. Nintendo says some Switch games are unsupported or not fully compatible with Switch 2, so check its compatibility guidance for the game you want to play.

How much do Switch 2 upgrade packs cost?

There is no single upgrade price. These examples were checked against Nintendo's US store on October 15, 2026. They are pack prices, not full-game prices, and each requires its corresponding base game. Prices in other regions and any checkout taxes may differ.

Upgrade packUS priceWhat it adds
Hollow KnightFreeAccess to the Switch 2 Edition for owners of the original game
Animal Crossing: New Horizons$4.99Switch 2 features including mouse controls and higher-resolution visuals
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild$9.99Visual and loading improvements, Zelda Notes and an extra save slot
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom$9.99Visual and loading improvements, Zelda Notes and an extra save slot
Kirby and the Forgotten Land + Star-Crossed World$19.99A new story alongside improved graphics and frame rate
Super Mario Party Jamboree + Jamboree TV$19.99Additional modes using Switch 2 features such as mouse controls and the microphone

Kirby and Jamboree illustrate why comparing prices alone can be misleading. Their packs add playable content, so the purchase is about more than sharper visuals. With Jamboree TV, some camera minigames also require a compatible camera sold separately. Check the modes you want to use before adding accessories to the bill.

If you do not own the base game, compare the complete Edition against the cost of buying the original plus its pack. Retail discounts can change which route costs less.

The Zelda upgrades included with Nintendo Switch Online

Owners of Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom should check their membership before spending $9.99. Both upgrade packs are included at no extra charge with an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription. The ordinary Nintendo Switch Online tier does not include this benefit, and neither pack supplies the base game.

There is also a difference between buying a pack and accessing it through membership. A separate purchase does not require an ongoing Expansion Pack subscription. Membership access ends when the qualifying subscription expires.

According to Nintendo's subscription FAQ, that expiry does not delete your save data. Renew the membership or buy the pack and you can continue from your saved progress. Subscription access requires an internet check, after which the packs can be used offline for up to seven days.

Breath of the Wild's Expansion Pass is another purchase entirely. The Switch 2 Edition does not include that DLC. If you own the Expansion Pass, Nintendo says it works with the base game on Switch 2 whether or not you buy the Edition upgrade.

Animal Crossing has both a free update and a paid upgrade

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a good reason to read past the word “upgrade”. Its free content update adds the resort hotel and other changes to both versions of the game. You do not need the paid Switch 2 pack just to get that hotel.

The Switch 2 Edition features are a different set of additions: up to 4K resolution in TV mode, mouse controls for activities such as decorating, a megaphone that uses the built-in microphone and CameraPlay. Online sessions can support up to 12 players when everyone is using the Switch 2 Edition.

Some activities in the free update still have separate requirements. Slumber Island needs Nintendo Switch Online, for example. “Free update” describes the download's price, not unrestricted access to every online feature.

Can you upgrade a physical Switch cartridge?

Yes. Nintendo supports upgrade packs for both physical and digital copies of the original Switch game. A pack is extra content for that copy, not a replacement digital licence for the base game, so keep your cartridge if that is how you own it.

Imported copies need an extra check. Although Nintendo says game cards are not region locked, compatibility between a game and an upgrade pack depends on the software. Nintendo recommends matching the regions of the game and pack. A cartridge running on your console does not automatically mean an upgrade from a different region's eShop will work with it.

If a purchased upgrade is not appearing, Nintendo recommends updating both the console and the base game, then checking that the pack's virtual game card is loaded on that console. Its upgrade troubleshooting guide covers those checks. Downloading the pack alone may not be enough.

Will your save carry over to the Switch 2 version?

Moving a save to a new console and using it in a newer version of a game are separate questions. Nintendo's System Transfer guide explains how to move games, supported saves and settings, but individual games still have their own rules.

Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom let you continue with existing saves in their Switch 2 Editions. Both also support Save Data Cloud. Each Edition offers a second save slot, although a second save file created there cannot be transferred back to the original Switch version.

Animal Crossing has its own island-transfer procedures. A whole-island transfer is different from moving one resident, and the island representative cannot use the single-resident method. Follow Nintendo's island-transfer guidance, including its instructions for continuing after System Transfer, before wiping or selling the old console.

Loading a digital game's virtual game card on another console does not move its save. The save remains on the original system until transferred through a supported method. Having the game ready to launch and having your progress available are not the same thing.

Some Switch games have no upgrade path

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is sold for both Switch and Switch 2, but Square Enix's official FAQ says there is no upgrade path available or planned. The two versions also cannot transfer or share saves with each other.

You can play the Switch version on Switch 2 through compatibility. That does not turn it into the separately sold Switch 2 version or make its save compatible with that release.

Check this before starting a long game on the older version with plans to upgrade later. The same title on two store listings is not enough to establish that your purchase or progress carries across.

Game-key cards are not upgrade packs

A game-key card is a physical card used to download and launch a game. It does not contain the full game data, and you still need the card inserted after downloading. Nintendo says the download needs enough internal storage or a microSD Express card.

That is different from a download code in a box, and different again from the virtual game cards used for digital purchases. None of those terms tells you whether an existing Switch owner qualifies for an upgrade.

Nintendo's Switch 2 FAQ says an Edition game card contains the original Switch game and its upgrade pack, though some publishers may instead sell download codes in physical packaging. Read the box or listing carefully when buying a complete Edition, especially if you want a physical copy.

Before paying, establish whether your game needs only a free update, whether you already have access through membership and whether the pack adds something you actually want. Then check the save rules. Those few details can prevent both an unnecessary purchase and an unwelcome restart.

Quick FAQ

Do I need to buy my Switch games again for Switch 2?

No, compatible physical and digital Switch games can be played on Switch 2 without buying them again. Enhanced features may need a free update or an upgrade pack, while some separately sold Switch 2 versions have no upgrade path.

Are all Switch 2 upgrade packs paid?

No. Hollow Knight's Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack is free for owners of the original game, while other packs have a separate price. A free software update is another way a game can receive improvements without an extra purchase.

Can I upgrade a physical Switch game?

Yes, where an upgrade pack is available for that game. You still need the original cartridge, and Nintendo recommends matching the regions of the base game and upgrade pack because compatibility varies by title.

What happens to my Zelda upgrade if my subscription expires?

If you access the Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom upgrade through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, that access ends when the qualifying membership expires. Your save data remains, so you can renew the membership or buy the pack separately to continue. A separately purchased pack does not depend on an active Expansion Pack subscription.
