Jagex has cancelled RuneScape Reignited after player feedback, dropping the planned fresh-start character type and its separate economy. The decision does not cancel RuneScape's December 2 updates or its free membership trial, which will now welcome eligible players into the existing community without Reignited's divisions.

In an October 15 statement, Mod Ryan said Jagex had missed the mark. Reignited had been announced at RuneFest on October 3 and was due to launch on December 2.

"Our goal is to see Runescape grow again, with returning players coming back and new players joining, but never at the expense of our existing community."

What still arrives on December 2

The Adventure Guide and the first part of the Remastered Journey are still scheduled for December 2, alongside other improvements intended to help new and returning players. Jagex also says its 2027 roadmap remains in place, including an Agility rework and a grandmaster quest.

The membership trial runs from December 2 to December 12, with exact start and end times still to be confirmed. It grants access to RuneScape Members worlds and content for new characters and existing characters that have had no active membership since June 2, 2026.

That restriction means it is not a free membership period for everyone. Characters that have held active membership since June 2 are ineligible, and Old School RuneScape is excluded entirely. No purchase or subscription is required to use the trial, but membership will be needed to keep accessing Members worlds outside the free period.

Jagex had already considered loosening the split

The original Reignited proposal offered a permanent character type with fresh hiscores and a new Grand Exchange economy. Existing and Reignited characters could share ordinary worlds, clans and homesteads, but could not trade with each other or enter the same boss instances. Reignited-only worlds were also planned.

Those restrictions went beyond asking players to start another character. Friends using different character types would have faced barriers to trading and bossing together, while Reignited characters initially required their own membership.

By October 9, Jagex was exploring whether players could switch between Veteran and Reignited versions of an existing character within one membership. It was also considering removing Reignited-only worlds and easing cross-character play restrictions after launch. These were possibilities under discussion, not confirmed changes.
